வண்டு படத் ததைந்த கண்ணி ஒண் கழல்

சிறு காரோடன் பயினொடு சேர்த்திய

Did he forget his promise that he would
not leave, that he made to me in Pothini
hills, owned by the great benefactor Āvi,
a man like Murukan,
who owns elephants with broken tusks,
and fought good battles against warriors
wearing flower garlands swarmed by bees
and bravery anklets, riding on fine horses?

He said that we would be together like a
whetstone created with stones and glue by
a young worker. But, causing my arms,
like bamboo, to become thin, he went away
to earn gold jewels and wealth, passing
through forests where the sun’s rays are
like flame, the land is cracked, the
temperature is painfully hot, trees are
parched offering very little shade, fresh
springs are dried with no water, boulders
are hot, and even rice could pop in the heat.

Since there are no travelers, wayside
robbers are depressed, the wasteland is
dull, and the wilted white flowers from
the murungai trees are blown off by fierce,
loud, twisting winds, the land looking like
the fine sprays on top of the breaking waves
near the seashore.

Notes: Poet Māmoolanār has a reference of Āvi of Pothini Hills in poem 61. Tamil scholars Navalar Na. Mu. Venkatasamy Naattaar and Po. Ve. Somasundaranar interpret the words அறு கோட்டு யானை as ‘அறுத்து திருத்திய கோட்டினையுடைய’ – ‘elephant with broken and fixed tusks’. பொ. வே. சோமசுந்தரனார் உரை – ‘உரு – அழகு எனினுமாம். இது ஒரு தமிழ்ச் சொல். உரு – உருவ என்று ஈறுதிரிந்தது என்பர் பழைய உரையாசிரியர்’. அகநானுறு 356 – சிறு காரோடன் பயினொடு சேர்த்திய கல் போல் நாவினேனாகி.
