Good morning All ,

Caste system is a Social Difference that does not come with expiry date.

We cannot avoid it

And even with all medical advancement it cannot be cured.

In this system all men and women are created unequal and remain so even after they die.

“Caste “ the word itself is a worse form of discrimination --My Friends .

One might ask ?- That was or maybe that is in india , But why we need to discuss this here in America ?

Because “you can take India out of some Indians, but you can’t take caste out of them, even in America “

As Dr. Bhimaro Ambedkar said “ If Hindus migrate to other regions on earth, caste would become a world problem.”

Trust me, it is becoming a problem here. And the only way, we can hope for some kind of solution is to accept and address this.

This is why, we are here -to address this discrimination, exists in America.

In 20 - 17, a team of South Asian academics, activists, community members and policy advocates spearheaded by Equality Labs, Taken the Survey “Caste in the United States : A Survey of Caste Among South Asian Americans “,

This survey is the only one of its kind ever done , taken among Fifteen Hundred (1,500 ) individuals of South Asian descent in the United States, found that

“one in three Dalit students reported discrimination during their education” and overwhelming 60 percent reported caste-based derogatory jokes or remarks directed at them .

“Caste in America” – A four part series produced by WGBH radio station – a member staion of NPR –national Public Radio broadcasted the experience shared by the students ,

I would like to quote couple of them

Meshram a former doctorate student at New England college and now a researcher in Brandise university said “We were at these parties with all the newly-admitted kids from India, and everybody just went around the room asking each other, like, 'What’s your caste?' “ - Asking fellow students their caste, Dalits say, establishes status and hierarchy within the community

Jaspreet Mahal, a former graduate student who is now a researcher at Brandeis caste privilege” has come out in other ways on campus. During a graduate class discussion about social-economic development in India, she said a fellow student stood up to talk about the historical achievements of her caste. It seems harmless. But to South Asians in the room, they would be able to place her in a dominant caste position," Mahal explained. "This was somebody showing their privilege, which silences others."

Brandeis officials have been taking a close look at these kind of stories. The university, founded as an academic haven for Jewish students who faced anti-Semitism at other schools, has strict prohibitions against racism, gender inequality and homophobia, among other behaviors. Caste bias is not one of them. Soon Brandeis will become a rare American university to ban caste discrimination. Leading the charge is Larry Simon, a professor at Brandeis’ Heller School of Social Policy and Management.

In addition to Brandeis , Harvard University and the University of California, Berkeley, are also exploring caste issues on their campsues . We request and Hope more universities will join hands to ban caste based discrimination on campus.

Thank you all for this opportunity , Thank you
